The new sensation of indie music: anuv jain

By Baani Mehandru

We are born with rhythm in our hearts and synchronicity in our breath, every atom makes us pursue its own tune. Music transcends the boundaries of language, rejuvenating our senses and making us whole. Anuv Jain, a young indie artist, has mastered this extraordinary ability to establish connections and emotions with his music. Jain produces “tear-jerker” music, breaking the hegemony of Bollywood and producing heartfelt compositions. His music compels you to form attachments and place yourself in stories he explores through each of his pieces.

The young artist began his career at the age of 16 when he started learning the guitar. His experience in his school band was the driving force that led him to pursue his passion and produce such striking pieces of art. Anuv’s music comes from the personal experiences and heart-wrenching emotions that he encountered. Each song has a personal touch to it that connects the audience and makes one long for something they haven’t felt before. One of his recent singles - “Maula” - addresses the death of his father through the perspective of his twin sister, who suffered the loss on a deeper level and was unable to come to terms with the harsh reality.

The artist, like many of us, has been through the rollercoaster of life, facing a multitude of low points in both personal and professional areas, which has never influenced the severity with which he makes his music. He believes in enunciating his music through tenderness and sadness, which allows him to get into the depths of the emotion, bringing about the very spirit of the piece. For him, the composition, as well as the album artwork, must render a story that resounds in his music.

While his music narrates his life stories, he works around the genres of Punjabi pop, indie, and folk, including verses in his native Punjabi. The ukulele, which he uses to add a touch of gentleness, is synonymous with his work. He also disagrees with the philosophy of selling his sound. His aim isn’t to trade his music, but instead, treat it like the ‘costless luxury unreservedly shared with whoever wants it’, as he mentioned to the ED Times. He believes the pressure of expectations and the possibility of greed stains the purpose of creating music.

A young boy from Ludhiana who began his journey through a phone recording posted on his friend’s YouTube channel, he has now not only reached out to a million hearts but also emerged as an aspiring new artist. He has made his music a source of communication, an outlet to relieve himself of the grave feelings he has experienced through the course of his life. He has given life to the part of him that lived within his music.
