The 2020 Emmys kicked off with an interesting start, the pandemic restricting in-person attendance and with TV stars appearing for the award show remotely. It was a big night for the cast, producers, and directors of Schitt’s Creek, Succession, and Watchmen. Already predicted to be a historical night due to the circumstances in which the Emmys took place, Zendaya added to the remarkable night by becoming the second black woman after Viola Davis, as well as the youngest person, to win an award in the ‘leading actress in a drama series’ category in Emmy history.

Suffice to say, the theme - Come As You Are - proved to be the highlight of the show, with each actor sporting varying looks, outfit changes a common occurrence.

Regina King stirred up a storm with her Schiaparelli rooftop photoshoot, later switching to an equally glamorous pantsuit, perfectly complimenting the Emmy she received later for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Television Movie for her role in HBO’s Watchmen. From pyjamas to elaborate gowns, this year’s remote Awards function saw it all, as each celebrity took it upon themselves to turn their living rooms into areas worthy of a red carpet.

RuPaul’s Drag Raceredefined the Outstanding Competition Program category, furthering the LGBTQ agenda and sending out a strong message. The resonating theme of the LGBTQ community wasn’t the only cleverly concealed message: Sandra Oh’s red carpet look incited several positive responses from the audience, as her royal purple jacket had the words ‘Black Lives Are Precious’ embroidered in Korean, artfully blending culture and the current events that swept the world.

As is the case each year, this year’s Emmys were not devoid of awkward moments, from Jimmy Kimmel and Jennifer Aniston accidentally setting the stage on fire, to the utilization of old video footage during speeches, to the Hazmat suit tuxedos worn by the presenters, keeping the audience constantly entertained.

Moving on to notable moments of the star-studded night, Schitt’s Creek set a record for the most wins by a single comedy series in the same season, taking home an astounding number of awards, seven. Schitt’s Creek further went on to sweep all four major acting categories in a single season, creating a memorable evening for those in attendance, and an unforgettable evening for the entire team. Zendaya’s award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her performance in Euphoria overshadowed the rest of the Emmys, whilst simultaneously creating history due to her young age. Needless to say, people are thrilled by the fact that Zendaya went down in Emmy history, receiving congratulations from numerous A-listers for her well deserved performance.
