Valentine's or Galentine's, call it what you will. On a day that celebrates love, the truest love must be made a priority - love for yourself. Whether your idea of self-love consists of elaborate dinners or extra sleep, this playlist should help you get into self-love mode.
1. Courtney Barnett – “Pedestrian at Best”
Pure self-love anarchy.
2. Mac Miller – “Self Care”
The premise of this song isn’t exactly empowering but “self-care, I’m treating me right; hell yeah, we’re gonna be alright” is a good enough for me to include a Mac Miller song in this playlist. Also, the key shift is impeccable.
3. Hot Chocolate – “You Sexy Thing”
I see how this could be construed as being about someone else, but it’s much more fitting when sung in front of the mirror.
4. Miley Cyrus – “Edge of Midnight (feat. Stevie Nicks)
A fruitful collaboration between two self-love queens.
5. Tamia – “Me”
You’d think that with the number of times Tamia uses third person pronouns, she might have a second party on her mind. But no, it’s all about herself.
6. Solange – “Borderline (An Ode to Self-Care)”
A bright, neo-soul track about taking time off for yourself.
7. Lizzo – “Worship"
A Franklin-esque soul song about being, well, worshipped in a relationship. “Worship” is perfect alternative for Sam Cooke fans who are sick of all the “don’t know much about biology, but I do know that I love you” and so on.
8. Ariana Grande – “pov”
Grande sings about learning to herself through receiving unconditional love.
9. Leslie Gore – “You Don’t Own Me”
An absolute classic about doing whatever you please. This is a song that will make you feel like the main character under any circumstances.
10. Fleetwood Mac – “Go Your Own Way”
Mick Fleetwood stresses the importance of following your own path.
