PLANET X

Written by Anika Chopra

Outer space is such a fascinating concept, and the conspiracy theories surrounding it make it even more fun to learn about. The idea that we are tiny creatures in one small world called Earth amongst millions in a bigger universe than any of us can imagine is enough to send me in a spiral, but it draws many towards the mystery of space.

Amongst theories claiming the existence of a killer planet called Nibiru, that the Earth is flat, and that there is a face on Mars, some claim the potential discovery of a ninth planet. Addressed as both 'Planet 9' and 'Planet X,' there is speculative research surrounding the existence of a giant planet tracing an irregular, elongated orbit in the outer solar system. The research was based on mathematical modelling and computer simulations. While there is a lack of direct observation and pictorial proof that this planet exists, it is engaging, to say the least.

There have been several debates about the existence of this planet in the scientific community. It is said to be similar in size to Uranus and Neptune, with a mass 10 times greater than Earth’s. Astronomers consider this planet to have been created in the Kuiper Belt. Dwarf planets and other small, icy objects tend to follow orbits that cluster together in this belt. By analyzing these orbits, a prediction has been formed that a large, previously undiscovered planet may be hiding far beyond Pluto.

While the research on this topic is highly vague and limited (quoting the physicist Brian Cox, “If anyone else asks me about 'Nibiru' the imaginary bull**** planet I will slap them around their irrational heads with Newton's Principia”), it does enlighten the childlike fondness I've always had for space science and, I'm sure it will evoke that interest for you too.
