Finding good mobile games can be challenging. Some are plagued with advertisements, others are impossible to play without in-app purchases, still others are mere cash-grabs disguised as entertainment. To help you with that, we’ve come up with a list of ten free-to-play mobile games that we think are worth your time. If you like first-person shooters, sports simulators, race simulators, strategy games, or even just social games, you’ll find something you will enjoy in this list.
Call of Duty: Mobile
Everyone’s heard of the Call of Duty series - inarguably one of the most popular video game franchises of all time. COD Mobile brings together the best maps, the best weapons, and the most iconic characters from each series within the franchise and puts it into one single mobile shooter. With incredibly fun gameplay, superb graphics, and an era-defining multiplayer system, COD Mobile is something you absolutely pick up. Take it from someone who hasn’t tired of it yet in eight months. There’s even a PWSA unofficial clan - although it’s full (we might make a new one).
8 Ball
It is such a simple game, so pure in its delivery, so innocent in its stature, so ruined due to doings of the average Indian gamer. 8 Ball is a game about hitting a ball with another ball so that the ball you hit goes into a pocket, but your ball remains on the table. The community is amazing. There are people who have the courage to put their children on their profile pictures, to put their religion, or even pictures of themselves. At the end of the day, what I find most unique about this game is when I beat someone, only for them to friend me afterwards to start insulting me on the basis of my religion, gender, and supposed sexual orientation. 8 Ball isn't about skill. It is about ruining the days of people dumb enough to play this game.
Evil Apples
Evil Apples is the digital version of the popular game ‘Cards Against Humanity’. The simple goal is to be the funniest friend by creating bizarre sentences. It’s a great game to play with more than 3 friends - socializing from home! In each round, one player serves as the judge, choosing which friend is the funniest. The best part is that there’s absolutely no rules about what you can say, so have no fear.
Mario Kart
Lockdown isn't exactly the most exciting period to be in and staring at your wall gets a little repetitive after a while, so try Mario Kart, the app. With characters that will send you miles into your nostalgia and competitions that give you a sense of validation in these unproductive times, what's not to love? Besides, if you’re one of those people that needs to scream at something every once in a while, this is the app for you.
F1 Mobile
A direct port of the well-received F1 20XX series by Codemasters, F1 Mobile is an absolute blast to play. Control your very own customizable F1 car across almost every single official track in the game - including Suzuka, the new Hanoi circuit, Silverstone, and the legendary Monza - and if you are so inclined, there’s a proper online ranking system in place. The graphics also are a notch above the rest, with fantastic shaders and incredibly detailed models. Car fans, give this game a try.
PES 2020
Pro Evolution Soccer 2020 is a football simulator on both iOS and Android that plays like the FIFA series on consoles, allowing you to participate in high-intensity matches and manage your own teams. With above-par graphics, an active multiplayer community and regular content addition, this game is definitely worth a try for anyone who knows anything about football and has time to kill!
Stick Cricket Super League
Arguably the culmination of the Stick Cricket series, Stick Cricket Super League puts you into the shoes of a new captain that must organize their cricket roster as well as hone their own skills on the long journey to the top cricketing leagues. With the addition of bowling strategy, this version of Stick Cricket is certainly the most complex. However, the game does not stray far from the classic direction and timing model that made the series so popular. And this iteration of the series is unquestionably the most entertaining. If you like cricket at all, download Stick Cricket Super League.
Nonogram
Nonogram is a logical puzzle wherein blocks must be filled with colours or crosses based on the numbers written next to each row and column. For example, if a row reads ‘5 2’, 5 blocks and 2 blocks are put together with crosses between them. Solved puzzles reveal a hidden picture- and usually the hard work is worth it! This is a game that requires a little bit of brain power, but it’s a fun way to distract yourself right now.
Motorsport Manager
Motorsport Manager is a racing management simulator that is very immersive, making you feel personally responsible for the performance of the team you manage. Although there are many complex elements to the gameplay, the user interface does a great job of laying out naturally You will manage your drivers, their happiness, development, budgeting and even the pit crew. And each choice you make has large (and often unpredictable) repercussions. This can be daunting, not helped by the steep learning curve, but that’s what makes the game interesting. Fans of strategy and racing games will both enjoy Motorsport Manager.
Alto’s Odyssey
Alto’s Odyssey is the side-scrolling endless runner sequel to the acclaimed Alto’s Adventure. While the core principles (chasing down animals, dodging obstacles, and doing cool snowboarding tricks) remain the same, the sequel comes with stunning visuals, allowing for a 90Hz gaming experience at a resolution higher than 1080p. More importantly, it’s a great way to kill time and admire your phone simultaneously. With a high skill ceiling and a gentle learning curve, it’s a game that welcomes beginners. And if you liked Temple Run or Desert Rally, Alto’s Odyssey is worth your time.
That’s all the games we have for you this time. If you ever get bored of one on the list, pick up a different one. They’re all fantastic, free games that our editorial staff has had a blast playing.
